Job Position: Non-Apprenticeship Position

Job Requirement

Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
• 12-24 months landscaping experience
• Ability to lift 50 lbs
• Class 5 license and personal work vehicle
• Knowledge of safe work practices and equipment maintenance
• High level of comfort working independently in remote areas
• Self directed time management
• Detail oriented with highly developed observation skills
• Effective communicator with co-workers and members of the public
• Punctual, trustworthy, and reliable

Assets:
• Knowledge of creating and implementing of property maintenance schedules
• Knowledge of native plants and invasive species
• Knowledge of conservation issues in the Fraser Valley
• Chainsaw safety course
• Herbicide applicators certification
• OFA Level 1 First Aid

Transportation Requirements

  • Must have Drivers license
  • Must have own vehicle
  • No Transit Availability

Job Description

We are looking for a hard working, observant, and personable employee who can take on various property maintenance roles. Applicants with local knowledge and ties to the Fraser Valley or Lower Mainland preferred. You will become part of a team that is working towards land conservation and wildlife habitat enhancement in the Lower Mainland of BC.

 

Description of Work:

Your primary work tasks will be:

  • Invasive species control on our conservation properties, environmentally sensitive areas, and restoration sites. This includes mechanical techniques as well as selective hand clipping and pulling to ensure survival of native species.
  • Field equipment care and maintenance.
  • Native vegetation planting on habitat restoration sites.
  • Maintain a field notebook and assist project staff with updating property databases and management plans.
  • Responsible for ensuring sites are maintained to a pre-set standard under the direction of project staff.
  • Act as an ambassador for land conservation and habitat stewardship while on the job site.
  • Manage tasks within established workplan and provide regular progress updates to project staff.

Additional work may include:

  • Assisting with mentoring of student staff members.
  • Assisting with volunteer events and work parties.
  • Assisting with photo point monitoring and land surveying.
  • Assisting with amphibian, invertebrate, mammal and other wildlife surveys as needed.

Job Location

Our office is in Mission with field sites distributed between Surrey and Agassiz. You must have a reliable vehicle and be able to transport equipment and plants (truck preferred). You will be reimbursed for mileage from the office to field sites.

Additional Information

You will be hired for to work 32 hours/week from August 27th to March 31st, 2019. If you are the right fit for our team, an extension will be offered at the end of the first work term. The intent is for you to grow with our organization, and take on more responsibility and learn new skills over time.
