Introducing the Practical Landscape Horticulture series

HortEducation.ca is excited to announce the Practical Landscape Horticulture series.

Practical Landscape Horticulture is a national learning resource aligned with the latest Canadian occupational standards for landscape horticulture professionals and educators. Practical Landscape Horticulture consists of a series of four books:

Book A: Performs Common Occupational Skills

Book B: Applies Horticultural Principles

Book C: Performs Landscape Construction

Book D: Performs Landscape Maintenance

The Practical Landscape Horticulture series has been developed to serve as a comprehensive resource tailored for practicing landscape horticulture in the field and for instructional purposes in a variety of settings throughout Canada, including workplace training, skills upgrading, training institution programs, and personal interest.

This series meets the needs of various user groups with its sequencing according to topic and adaptable binder format. With a combination of theory, practical application, instruction sets, quiz questions, and skill set summaries, these resources enable Landscape Horticulture careers to flourish.

Designed to accommodate a variety of landscape-oriented training programs, including institutional or workplace training and self-study. Who is the Practical Landscape Horticulture designed for?

Educators and students pursuing careers in landscape horticulture. This series enables educators to determine the sequence of topic delivery for their program needs or use them to follow the Landscape Horticulturist RSOS apprenticeship training sequence.

Employers who want to provide structured employee training for foundational skills or add new skill sets to increase client services.

Individuals wanting to upgrade their skills or challenge the Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist trade certification exam.

Related industries that benefit from shared skill sets within the series, such as horticulture science.

The series encompasses every task and subtask outlined in the latest landscape standards (RSOS). Seasoned Landscape contractors find it a valuable resource for enhancing skills related to evolving green infrastructure systems and current industry standards.

The Practical Landscape Horticulture series is a valuable initiative coordinated by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) and generously funded by the Canadian Agriculture Human Resource Council (CAHRC) as part of their ‘Growing the Agriculture Workforce of the Future’ Program. Developed in collaboration with HortEducation.ca, the content has had tremendous support from various industry stakeholders.

Numerous individuals, including many subject matter experts, horticultural organizations, instructors, suppliers, and practitioners, have contributed significantly to its development over many years.

While each book within the series offers in-depth coverage of major task groups and can function independently, given the multifaceted nature of landscape horticulture, tasks often necessitate a foundational understanding of related principles and techniques to be executed correctly and safely.

For instance, proficiently constructing a landscape requires not only practical skills but also a grasp of fundamental horticultural principles, proper tool utilization, and safety protocols. Thus, the books are most effectively utilized as a complete set, as they frequently reference tasks and concepts discussed in other volumes of the series.

The Practical Landscape Horticulture series can be purchased in the HortEducation.ca webstore as a complete series. Each volume is also sold separately. There is an $85 discount when purchasing the complete series.
