The Wesley Hawley Memorial Award was presented at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s, School of Horticulture Scholarships & Awards Celebration, on April 4th, 2017.
Congratulations to Aaron Smith, who completed his Arborist Technician technical training at Kwantlen in March. Lindsay Lindholm, HEBC staff member, presented the award. Aaron has great dedication and enthusiasm for his career in arboriculture. We know Aaron will go far in his career endeavors.
We would also like to thank Aaron for his touching letter recognizing Wesley and the work he did for developing the Arborist apprenticeship program; as well as, recognizing Wesley’s family, friends, and HEBC.
Wesley Hawley Memorial Award
Wes Hawley loved life and pursued it whole-heartedly. He truly understood the magic that can be found in family, friendship and nature, and the joy that he brought to those around him will not be forgotten. He had passion for trees and learning, and encouraged anyone who wanted to improve their skills in the industry.
As the owner of Hawleyscape Tree Service Ltd., he took his passion for the industry to work with him each and every day. He was a board of director with HortEducationBC and on the industry steering committee that developed the Arboriculture apprenticeship program. His enthusiasm for the program was contagious.
HortEducationBC was founded in 2005, as the voice for horticulture apprenticeship; including Arborist Technician, Climbing Arborist, Landscape Horticulturist, Production Horticulturist, and Utility Arborist.
Criteria: student enrolled in either the Arborist Technician or Climbing Arborist Apprenticeship; achievement of 70% in both technical training and certificate of qualification exam; demonstrated leadership in the classroom and field, with attributes of an effective team player.
