National Skills Competition – Saskatoon

The National Skills competition took place from May 27th to 30th in Saskatoon. The Landscape competition is one of the 40 trades represented during the 4 days. As usual, landscape draws a large crown, who come to see how the competitors progress. Four provinces competed; Team Alberta who received Gold, Team Manitoba who received Silver, Team Quebec who received Bronze, and Team Ontario.

Annika Kristensen, HortEducation.ca, attended as one of the judges. Team Canada acted as judges as well, which gave them a different perspective, and will help them prepare to compete at the WorldSkills Competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil August 2015. Workshop Supervisor, Kyla McKechnie from Landscape Alberta, received an award for her fantastic work on organizing all the materials for the competition. The National Technical Committee, includes Stephen Carlton (Alberta), Gord Bone (Manitoba), Shane Jones (Ontario), Sylvie Metthe (Quebec), and Kyle MacDonald (Nova Scotia).

Next year’s provincial competition takes place in April 2016, and the national competition will be in Moncton, June 2016.
